2019/2020 Workshop Series

Hip Function for 21st Century Bodies

In this fun and informative workshop we’ll explore the lumbo-pelvic region and how it may be affected by sitting, laptop use, and standing while looking at a phone. Using Pilates mat work as a knowledge base, we’ll try some simple exercises that can help balance the demands on the contemporary pelvis.

About Andrea Spaziani

Photo- Andy

Andrea Spaziani (she/her) generates choreographic scores by combining movement, speaking and writing in a stream of improvisation. She is preoccupied by the question ‘why do I think the way that I do?’ and uses biases as material in order to transform their influence.

Andrea has been living between Toronto, New York City, and Marfa, Texas where she co-created the interdisciplinary lecture series ‘Archaeology of the Frivolous’ with Alejandro Fargosonini. She is a 2016-2019 Artist in Residence at the Dancemakers Centre for Creation (Toronto) where she created the ensemble work ‘Silver Venus’ (2018) and recently premiered ‘The Right Eye of Clint’ (2019) with collaborators Matt Smith and celebrated choreographer Danny Grossman.

In fall 2018 she engaged in a 3-month choreographic mentorship project with Maria Jerez in Madrid, Spain, culminating in the premiere of ‘THE STAIN’ at BUDA in Kortrijk, Belgium. In June 2019 she began an experiment in curation as choreography called ‘SPACEBODIES III’ at the Small Arms Inspection Building in Mississauga, Ontario with Linda Duvall (Saskatoon), Kate Nankervis (Toronto), Christopher Willes (Montreal), and Shan Turner-Carroll (NSW, Australia). She was a core collaborator on the social art practice ‘Handwriting the Constitution’ founded by Morgan O’Hara in New York City in 2017.

Upcoming projects include ‘AGGRO INFINITUM’: a dance-film collaboration with Alicia Grant at the Performing Arts Forum (St. Erme, FR) and Ponderosa (Berlin, DE) in spring 2020, and ‘Intimate Experiences’ programmed by Emily Mast at Mast on Fig in Los Angeles, CA.

She received an MFA in Creative Practice from the Transart Institute / Plymouth University in 2016.
